Main Battle Tank The mainstay of the Russian Army for more than two decades, the T-62M last saw Russian first-line service in Afghanistan, before being pensioned off to the second-echelon forces and reserves. This rugged vehicle was exported around the world and was ideally suited for the armored ‘flying columns’ employed in the Afghan war. Now, many of the Russian T-62s are in the hands of the Taleban. With its characteristic dome-shaped turret, the T-62 is armed with a 115 mm smoothbore gun. Secondary armament includes a coaxial and anti-aircraft machine gun. Self-defense includes the ubiquitous smoke dischargers and smoke-screen generator connected to the diesel engine. |

Main Battle Tank Though obsolete for decades, by the standards of the Western powers, the T54 and its cousin, the T-55, are still in service in many countries and can still be effective weapons. Sporting a 100 mm D-10T2S main gun and Armour effective against light cannon, the T-54 soldiers on. The gun may no longer be able to penetrate current tank Armour, but is still a threat to light vehicles and APCs. The T-54B has precious little defense against modern missiles and aircraft, comprising little more than smoke capability and an anti-aircraft machine gun. |

xx BMP-1 Fotos: 1 2 3 |
Infantry Fighting Vehicle The BMP-1 was designed in the 1960s. It was intended to be an amphibious personnel carrier capable of supporting its eight-man troop complement directly. Weapons include a 73 mm gun firing rocket-assisted ammunition and a wire-guided anti-tank missile of ‘60s vintage. The infantry were originally intended to be able to fire their rifles from inside the vehicle, though this was later found to be of limited utility. A successful (and cheap) design, many thousands of BMP-1s have been produced, seeing service all over the world. |

122 mm Multiple Rocket Launcher The BM-21 is a rocket artillery system of ‘50s vintage, comprising an Ural cross-country truck chassis and a 40-round elevatable launcher on the rear deck. It is still in widespread use with many Russian client countries. Russia operates an improved derivation of this system with a 50 round launcher known as the 9A51 Prima, which employs a parachute-retarded HE fragmentation round. |

Quad 23 mm Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun System. The Shilka is an old anti-aircraft gun system, but still an effective threat in its latest, improved versions. The ZSU-23-4’s main armament is a quad battery of 23 mm cannons firing Armour piercing and high explosive rounds. Aimed by a Gun Dish radar system, the Shilka can rapidly lay fire out to 2,500 m on aircraft or helicopter targets. |

Low-to-High-Altitude Surface-to-Air Missile System. The Buk-1M system comprises a self-propelled mount vehicle that carries and launches the missiles. On the front of this vehicle is mounted the Fire Dome monopulse tracking radar for guiding the missiles. A second vehicle mounts the 9S18M1 Snow Drift target acquisition radar. The 9M38M1 missile fired by the Buk-1M has a maximum range of around 32,000 m. However, the system also has a significantly large minimum range, in the region of 3,000 m, making it difficult to engage close targets such as battlefield helicopters. |
